Shadow Power with LA Girl!

Friday, August 16, 2013

One of the most asked questions I receive is "What product can I apply on my lids to make my eyeshadow last the whole day?"

Do you have the same makeup dilemma with your eyeshadow? There are a whole bunch of eyeshadow primers out there but only a handful have made the cut. Products I use the most when I am doing makeup at weddings (where making makeup last is a MUST) are Too Faced Shadow Insurance (which just works wonders), and MAC paint in Bare Canvas or Painterly -which again are not easy to come by in the Metro!

But I wanted to try something new, more affordable, and readily available. That's when I came across LA Girl's Pro Primer.

LA Girl Pro Primer (PhP 199.00 each)
They don't sell this in 3's here in Manila, but I was able to get this from New York (They sell everything by the bulk in the US. Lucky.). So, basically, these eyeshadow primers come in three colors:

The down side about LA Girl is that they don't have testers for these. I would have loved to have tested these first before I bought them but it also kind of piqued my interest (confused much? LOL)

I love sleek packaging. Very simple and it does look pro. A lot of women love pro-looking makeup, so I guess that's a plus? Its slim tube makes the pen very easy to handle when you are applying some product on your lids.

The product glides on smoothly on skin so that makes it very blendable with your fingers. Fortunately it's not too creamy that it can easily break off the tube.

I didn't expect the white primer to be so stark -I was hoping for it to be something a little bit more translucent-ish, but I guess this will work.

So, I have swatched these primers and compared them to a swatch without a primer. The results are pretty great! I love that the eyeshadows become more vibrant! If you use the corresponding primer to the proper eyeshadow shade.

WHITE PRIMER:

NUDE PRIMER:

BLACK PRIMER:
The black primer was a bit trickier. I tried a navy blue eyeshadow instead of black because i wanted to see the outcome when used with dark colored shades. I also compared it with the other 2 primers. With white primer, the eyeshadow became lighter, and with black, the eyeshadow becomes darker (obviously), so I think the nude primer works best whether it be dark or light eyeshadow.

So this is how it went down. I used the white primer for highlighting the brow bones and I think they really help the area really pop!
Then, with my ring finger, I spread the primer on my lids. As you can see, the black one is a little bit messy.
I applied my eyeshadow as usual and these are the results:

I think the primers are the the same as cream eyeshadow sticks but shadow sticks are not that long lasting. Applying cream eyeshadow first on your lids can make eyeshadow last longer too! Applying foundation on your lids though can make eyeshadow crease if you don't set the foundation with powder first because foundations contain oil or silicone. So, best to set your foundation first with powder before applying your eyeshadow. I have tried this technique several times in the past and it worked out pretty well for me.

I'd say I like these primers, but I would use the nude shade rather than the black or white. They're not bad to have in your stash, I think they come very handy when you need intensity and high pigmented eyeshadows to pop!

Yay or Nay? Thoughts?

  8. Oh now I know. I used face primer for my eyelids once and nothing good happened. Thanks for sharing this. Although I don't use eyeshadows often, I still need to invest in good quality primers for special occasions.
